Nobody had missed them, and nobody noticed them return separately.

Elodie’s idea. Of course.

Chapter Four

This is a really bad idea.

Agreeing to meet with Elodie, to talk with her—to try to talk with her. There had been so many good reasons not to, and yet Flick had caved. Even though that inner voice had told her, over and over, what she already knew and refused to accept.

This is a really bad idea.

How could they possibly get around that central issue? Though four years had passed, along with many other girls, Flick knew she could never forget that text. And even if she could forgive, make herself understand, the underlying problem was the same.

Elodie had done it out of fear, out of shame over her own feelings. Shame that had been misplaced. Flick had spent too long happily out to go back to sneaking and self-loathing.

Yet when the text had arrived that morning, she had agreed to meet with her.

She had gone over to the Hamiltons’ that morning, greeted Jena—who had been curled up on the sofa pretending to be unaware of her mother’s fretting—and gone up to Elodie’s room. That familiar white door, the blue rag-rolled walls, the frilled curtains—the queen-sized, duvet-covered bed.

And now, an hour later, her hair was spread across that duvet, her feet on the pillow, as she sprawled next to Elodie in sated exhaustion.

This was a really, really bad idea.
